3 History of Psychology WUNDT AND STRUCTURALISM. Wilhelm Wundt (1832–1920) was a German scientist who was the first person to be referred to as JAMES AND FUNCTIONALISM. William James (1842–1910) was the first American psychologist who espoused a different FREUD AND PSYCHOANALYTIC THEORY. Psychology is a relatively young science with its experimental roots in the 19th century, compared, for example, to human physiology, which dates much earlier.
